Now that you have taken part in Genius Hour for a marking period, how can you relate to the information in the article? Do you agree /disagree with the article? Do you have anything new to add to the discussion?
I relate to the information in the article greatly after having taken part in Genius Hour for a marking period, because I think that Genius Hour is an amazing opportunity for students. It's easy to relate because I look forward to doing more research on topics that I am interested in through this project. We chose the dorm room projects, because that is something that is on our mind currently and it is beneficial information for us to know at this time, and can benefit others wondering the same things. I completely agree with the statement that appears at the end of the article, "There's not a lot of freedom in education right now." Most projects assigned by teachers are straightforward, and must be completed to their liking and preferred format, which makes failure a real possibility. As the article says, Genius Hour promotes failure as being an option, because you're learning to adapt to it and eventually accept it and move on. For instance, a kid who has received all As throughout his entire elementary, middle, and high school years with little effort who finally gets to college might find it difficult to accept a C even, because he hasn't been conditioned to accept disappointment or failure. If kids were not given these opportunities to fail with Genius Hour, they might end up in a similar predicament. I agree with the article because it inspires creativity and I think that integrating Genius Hours into more schools would be a beneficial addition to their curriculum.
